Niko
There is virtually no home in Belgium without a Niko switch on the wall. With a domestic market share of more than 70% in residential switches and sockets, Niko is not just a brand — it is part of the Belgian identity. What began as a family business producing porcelain switches has grown into a European player with more than 5,000 products for lighting, energy management, home automation and access control.
At Integration At Home, we combine Niko switches and Niko Home Control with Control4 for a seamless smart home.
From Porcelain to Smart Home: More than a Century of Innovation
In 1919, the brothers Werner and Alfons De Backer founded the company in Sint-Niklaas, named after the city itself. The first products: porcelain switches and sockets. In 1928, Niko purchased its first Bakelite press. In 1958, the year of Expo ’58, Niko launched the iconic rocker switch that would adorn generations of Belgian homes.
In 1997, Niko took its first steps in home automation with Nikobus. In 2011, the company launched Niko Home Control — a programmable platform for lighting control, heating, cooling and curtains. Niko no longer speaks of “home automation”, but of a modern electrical installation that is available to everyone.
Today, Niko is a third-generation family business with more than 750 employees and offices in ten European countries. Production, R&D, sales and customer service are brought together at the headquarters in Sint-Niklaas. In 2019 awarded the Factory of the Future Award by Agoria — recognition for the vertically integrated production where virtually everything is made in-house, from plastic granules to finished switches.
The Design Collections
Niko Original
Soft lines and rounded shapes that suit every cosy and modern interior. White, cream white and silver grey. The ideal choice for an unobtrusive, harmonious finish that blends into the interior.
Niko Intense
Richer colour palette and more pronounced shapes. White, lunar white, sterling (metallic silver), anthracite and the deep matt black. High-quality PC+ASA plastic, self-extinguishing and halogen-free. A modern colour accent without the step to metal finishes.
Niko Pure
Ultra-sleek premium range in exclusive materials: brushed aluminium (grey, black, blue-grey, gold), stainless steel, bamboo, Bakelite (piano black and chocolate brown) and liquid (high-gloss black and snow white). Timeless, minimalist design with refined details.
Niko Rocker
A tribute to the iconic rocker switch of 1958. Handmade in Belgium, entirely from aluminium and steel. Robust metal construction with a distinct “click”. Optional hidden-until-lit LED as status feedback. Available in brushed aluminium (black, blue-grey, gold), coated steel (white, black, champagne) and combinations. As a 230V switch and as a Niko Home Control interface with integrated temperature and humidity sensor. iF Design Award.
Niko Toggle
A modern nod to the classic Bakelite toggle switches from 1928. Works like a small joystick: a gentle movement up or down. Subtle notch at the top of the lever, softly etched texture and robust form. Handmade in Belgium from aluminium and steel, the same finishes as the Rocker. Also available as a Niko Home Control interface with sensors. iF Design Award.
Niko Home Control: The Modern Electrical Installation
Niko Home Control is not a luxury product for a select target group — it is the evolution of the standard electrical installation. The architecture is based on a connected controller in the distribution board that communicates with switching, dimming and motor modules via a two-wire, non-polarised bus cable in free topology. Minimal cabling, simple installation and flexible expansion. Bistable relays for low energy consumption.
Functionalities: lighting switching and dimming (including LED), mood scenes at a single press, motor control for roller shutters and curtains, zone-based heating and cooling with weekly programmes, automatic ventilation based on CO₂ sensors, energy monitoring, occupancy simulation, all-off, panic function, burglar alarm and video door intercom. The Niko Home app provides full control from anywhere in the world.
Wireless Expansion
Not every room has bus cabling. Niko offers dimmer switches with Bluetooth and EnOcean (kinetic, battery-free — the energy is generated by the pressure on the switch). A wireless bridge adds wireless control points to existing installations. All wireless controls available in the full design range, with more than 178 design combinations.
Energy Management: Smarter Consumption
Real-time insight: Production from solar panels, consumption per circuit, battery status and charging/discharging visible in the app. Historical consumption per day, week, month or year, convertible to euros.
Smart charging: Optimisation of electric vehicle charging based on solar panel production. Dynamic tariff integration helps consume when it is cheapest.
Capacity tariff: Peaks are monitored with warnings when a higher peak tariff is imminent. Essential in the current Belgian tariff landscape.
Niko Home Control and Control4: The Best Combination
Niko Home Control offers an open API for system integrators. For Control4, a dedicated bidirectional driver exists (developed by Janus Technology) that automatically discovers all devices and adds them as Control4 proxies — without additional programming. Supports lighting, dimmers, relays, contact sensors, PIR motion sensors and thermostats including AC thermostats.
At Integration At Home, we leverage this integration to combine the best of both worlds: the reliable, widely deployed Niko infrastructure for the base electrical installation, and Control4 as the overarching platform that also controls audio, video, security and climate.
Niko in the IAHome Smart Home
The occupant presses a Niko Rocker alu gold in the living room. Via Niko Home Control, the Delta Light spots dim to 40%. The Integratech LED strips switch to warm ambiance. The Gira curtain motors close the curtains. The NAD M33 V2 starts via BluOS an evening playlist on the Focal speakers. The thermostat switches to evening comfort. Everything coordinated by Control4, triggered by a single Belgian switch.
The best of Belgian craftsmanship and international smart home intelligence in one seamless experience.
