Casambi
Wireless Lighting Control That Rewrites the Rules

Imagine: a fully intelligent lighting system without control cables, without a central controller and without internet. Every luminaire communicates directly with every other luminaire, wirelessly and encrypted via Bluetooth. That is Casambi. A Finnish technology platform that fundamentally simplifies lighting control without compromising on functionality or reliability.

At Integration At Home, we deploy Casambi as a wireless lighting layer within your smart home. Standalone in spaces where no wired control is available, or as an extension of your KNX installation via a gateway. The result is a lighting system you control via app, physical switches or fully automatically — seamlessly integrated with the rest of your home technology.

What Is Casambi

Casambi Technologies is a Finnish company that developed the Casambi platform: a lighting control solution built on Bluetooth Low Energy mesh technology. In just over ten years, Casambi has grown into a global leader with more than 300 ecosystem partners and over five million devices sold.

The core principle of Casambi is radical simplicity in architecture. Where traditional lighting control requires a central controller, control cables and commissioning software, Casambi works without any of that. Every Casambi-compatible device — whether an LED driver, a dimmer, a sensor or a switch — functions as an autonomous intelligent node in a mesh network. The complete system intelligence is replicated in every node. There is no single point of failure: if a device fails, the network automatically routes via other nodes.

The Casambi system is compatible with nearly 2,100 third-party products, including LED drivers, luminaires, sensors, switches and modules. All Casambi Ready devices are mutually compatible and work with the free Casambi App for iOS and Android.

How Casambi Works – Bluetooth Mesh Without Compromise

Casambi uses Bluetooth Low Energy as its communication protocol. This is the same technology present in every modern smartphone and tablet, which means no additional hardware is needed to operate the system. The Bluetooth mesh topology is self-organising and self-healing: devices communicate directly with each other, without a router or gateway.

A Casambi network can contain up to 250 devices. Every device carries a complete backup of the network, so even devices that temporarily go offline are automatically updated when they become reachable again. Firmware updates are distributed over the air across the network.

The system functions normally without an internet connection; an optional gateway is only needed for remote control or integration with building management systems via the cloud.

Security is built in: all communication within the mesh network is encrypted. The network is only accessible to authorised users via the Casambi App, with configurable access levels for residents, guests and installers.

What Can You Do with Casambi

Casambi offers an extensive set of lighting functions that are configured and controlled via the app.

Dimming and Switching

Dim and switch individual luminaires or groups, manually or automatically. Casambi supports both traditional dimming and tunable white, allowing you to adjust the colour temperature of your lighting from warm to cool white, tailored to the time of day or the activity.

Scenes and Animations

Create lighting scenes that are activated with a touch: a dinner scene with dimmed warm light, a work scene with cool neutral light, a cinema scene with minimal background illumination. Animations enable dynamic light transitions for mood lighting or architectural effects.

Timers and Astronomical Schedules

Programme your lighting based on time schedules or astronomical data such as sunrise and sunset. The outdoor lighting switches on automatically at dusk and off at dawn, without manual intervention.

Daylight Regulation and Presence Detection

Casambi-compatible sensors measure the available daylight and automatically adjust the artificial lighting for a constant light level. Presence sensors switch on the lighting when motion is detected and dim or extinguish the light in empty rooms. This can deliver up to sixty per cent savings on lighting energy consumption.

RGBW and Colour Control

For luminaires with RGB or RGBW LEDs, Casambi offers full colour control via the app. Create a broad spectrum of light colours and dynamic effects for mood lighting, decorative lighting or architectural accentuation.

Blind and Curtain Control

In addition to lighting, Casambi also supports the control of blinds and curtains, allowing you to combine light and shade in integrated scenes.

Casambi Hardware – What Is in the Ecosystem

Casambi is a platform, not a luminaire brand. The hardware consists of modules, controllers, sensors and control elements that are built into or coupled with existing lighting products.

CBU Modules – The Building Blocks

The CBU modules form the core of the system. They are available in various versions: DALI controllers that wirelessly integrate wired DALI drivers into the Casambi network, PWM dimmers for constant voltage LED strips and LED modules, 0–10V controllers with built-in relay and motion sensor input, and compact OEM modules that are integrated directly into luminaires and LED drivers. Long-range variants are available for greater distances.

Salvador Series – DALI Controllers

The Salvador 4000 series DALI controllers seamlessly integrate wired DALI drivers into the Casambi system. With built-in power supply and real-time clock, these controllers are suitable for professional installations where DALI and Casambi converge.

Sensors

Casambi-compatible sensors include PIR presence detectors, lux sensors, combined presence and light sensors and even air quality sensors. Some sensors are so compact they are built into the luminaire itself; others are independently mounted in ceilings or on rails.

Xpress – Physical Control

The Casambi Xpress is a wireless switch with four programmable buttons for activating scenes, dimming and navigating without a smartphone. Compact, elegant and battery-powered, it can be placed wherever you want without any cabling.

KNX Gateway

The VBU-K2C gateway forms the bridge between Casambi and KNX. Up to 32 KNX channels and 32 Casambi scenes can be registered. This enables bidirectional communication: KNX switches activating Casambi scenes, or Casambi sensors triggering KNX actions. For Integration At Home, this is the key to combining Casambi lighting with an existing or new KNX home automation installation.

Casambi and DALI – Wireless and Wired United

One of the most powerful features of Casambi is its seamless integration with DALI, the international standard for digital lighting control. Via the CBU-DCS gateway, wired DALI luminaires are transparently incorporated into the Casambi mesh network. The result is what the industry describes as wireless DALI: the functionality of a DALI system without the complexity and cabling of a conventional DALI installation.

This is particularly valuable in renovations where no control cables are present, or in projects where a combination of wired and wireless luminaires is necessary. Existing DALI luminaires gain wireless functionality; new Casambi Ready luminaires are added to the system without additional wiring.

How We Integrate Casambi into Your Home

Casambi as an Extension of KNX

In homes with a KNX home automation system, Casambi functions as a wireless lighting layer controlled via the KNX-Casambi gateway. This is ideal for spaces where no control cables have been provisioned, for outdoor lighting that needs to function wirelessly, or for architectural lighting where luminaires are mounted in inaccessible locations. The KNX installation remains the central brain; Casambi adds wireless flexibility where needed.

Casambi as a Standalone System

For renovation projects or homes without wired home automation, Casambi offers a fully fledged lighting control system without the need for control cables. Any existing luminaire can be fitted with a Casambi module, after which the entire system is configured via the app. Scenes, schedules, sensor control and group management are available without structural modifications.

In both scenarios, we connect Casambi to your broader smart home system. Via Control4 or the KNX gateway, lighting control becomes part of your daily scenes: a welcome scene activates the right lighting, closes the blinds and starts the music. A night scene extinguishes all lights in the house except a dimmed night light on the landing.

Why Casambi – The Advantages Summarised

No control cables are needed, which can deliver up to forty per cent savings on material and installation costs compared to a DALI installation. There is no central controller, eliminating any single point of failure.

The system is scalable from a single room to an entire building, and expandable by simply adding devices. Firmware updates are delivered over the air, keeping the system future-proof.

The configuration is adaptable without rewiring: what dims a reading lamp today can activate a lighting scene tomorrow.

Frequently Asked Questions about Casambi
