NAD
Honest Power and Future-Proof Technology

In an audio market full of exaggerated specifications and inflated wattage figures, NAD has chosen a different path for more than fifty years: honest power, innovative technology and exceptional value. Where other brands impress with impressive figures that only apply when two channels are driven, NAD publishes its power specifications according to the Full Disclosure Power principle — all channels simultaneously, across the full frequency range, at the stated distortion level.

At Integration At Home, we integrate NAD amplifiers and AV receivers into Control4 smart home systems with BluOS multiroom and Dirac Live room correction.

From Munich to the World: The History of NAD

The story begins in 1972 at the High End audio fair in Munich, where a group of European audio importers became frustrated with the technical hype of Japanese hi-fi products. They hired Dr. Martin L. Borish — an electrical engineer with a doctorate in physics. Borish established NAD from his apartment in London and hired the brilliant Norwegian engineer Bjørn Erik Edvardsen.

NAD — New Acoustic Dimension. The mission: to prove that excellent sound quality and excellent value can coexist. After dozens of prototypes, Borish and Edvardsen unveiled the NAD 3020 in 1978 — an integrated amplifier that would change the audio industry forever. Just 20 watts per channel on paper, but with dynamic power that put amplifiers of multiple times the price to shame. The secret: low negative feedback, high current capacity and the ability to drive real-world speakers effortlessly. The 3020 became the best-selling hi-fi amplifier of all time.

After the 3020, more industry standards followed. Today, NAD has its headquarters at the Lenbrook Group in Pickering, Ontario (Canada), is sold in more than 80 countries and its development team is led by protégés of Edvardsen.

The Core Technologies of NAD

HybridDigital and Full Disclosure Power

HybridDigital combines digital and analogue amplification with Purifi Eigentakt Class D modules: flat frequency response regardless of load impedance, cool, efficient and powerful. Full Disclosure Power (FDP): all channels simultaneously, 20 Hz–20 kHz, at the stated distortion. An 85-watt NAD actually delivers those 85 watts to every speaker simultaneously.

MDC: Modular Against Obsolescence

Modular Design Construction places digital circuits on replaceable modules. New technology? Replace a module, not the entire unit. The T 758 V3 received three upgrades over nine years. The latest MDC2 generation offers bidirectional communication with Dirac Live, BluOS streaming and aptX HD Bluetooth. No other brand offers this level of future-proofing.

PowerDrive and Dirac Live

PowerDrive adjusts the power supply voltage to the input signal — dynamic peaks well above rated power. That is why an 85-watt NAD sounds like 140 watts. Dirac Live corrects not only frequency response but also impulse response: tighter, more precise sound with better stereo imaging. Five memory slots for unique room measurements. Optional Bass Control for independent subwoofer calibration.

BluOS Multiroom

BluOS is the hi-res multiroom streaming platform that NAD shares with sister brand Bluesound. Streaming up to 24-bit/192 kHz, MQA, and more than 25 services including Spotify, TIDAL, Qobuz and Amazon Music HD. Roon Ready, Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and TIDAL Connect built-in. The NAD M33 V2 in the living room, a Bluesound NODE in the kitchen, a POWERNODE in the bedroom and a PULSE on the terrace — all synchronised via BluOS, controllable via the app or via Control4 scenes.

Control4 Integration by Integration At Home

NAD AV receivers offer RS232 serial control and trigger in/out for seamless Control4 integration. NAD stereo amplifiers with BluOS are controllable via the network. At Integration At Home, we configure the bidirectional communication: on/off, volume, input selection, listening mode and status feedback.

The Movie Night Scene

“Movie Night” is activated with a single action via your Control4 touchscreen, Basalte keypad or Lithoss switch. The NAD T 778 switches on, selects the correct HDMI input, activates Dolby Atmos and sets the volume to film level. The JVC projector starts. The Multivision Screens or Lumene screen descends. The Integratech LED strips dim to cinema ambiance. The Delta Light spots switch off. The Gira curtains close.

For music lovers, we programme a “Listening” scene: the NAD M33 V2 in Pure Direct, BluOS streams via TIDAL or Qobuz, the Integratech lighting creates ambiance, and Bluesound players in other rooms synchronise via BluOS.
